The Australian Privacy Principles. The Privacy Act 1988 and its Australian Privacy Principles cover some organisations and not others. According to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), the Act generally applies to organisations with an annual turnover of more than $3 million, with some exceptions (checked 18 Oct 2026). Where the Act applies, it gives you rights such as knowing why information is collected, getting access to it, having it corrected and making a complaint.
Complaints. The OAIC asks people to complain to the organisation first, in writing. If there is no response within 30 days, or you are unhappy with it, you can complain to the OAIC in writing about an organisation the Privacy Act covers. Its enquiries line is 1300 363 992 (checked 18 Oct 2026).
